True orthodontic emergencies are rare. A broken bracket or ligature may be annoying but rarely harmful.
These types of repairs can be made at the next routine visit, if necessary.

The following are the common emergencies you may encounter.

Soreness of Teeth
When you get your braces on or after some adjustment visits, you can expect to experience
sore teeth to some degree for the next 3-4 days, as the teeth gradually move in response to our adjustment.
Over-the-counter pain relievers (such as Tylenol) can be used to diminish the discomfort.
Eating very soft foods will minimize tooth soreness.

Soreness of Gum and Cheek
Initially, the braces may feel rough against the cheeks, lips, and tongue. You may place wax around the bracket until the irritation disappears or the mouth becomes used to the braces. Please refrain from eating while the wax is placed, because you may swallow the wax. You can also relieve soreness by rinsing mouth with a warm salt water or mouthwash. Dissolve one teaspoonful of salt in 8 ounces of warm water and rinse your mouth vigorously. The lips, cheeks, and tongue may become irritated for one to two weeks as they toughen and become accustomed to the surface of the braces.

Loose Braces
A loose bracket is one of the most common emergencies patients call to inquire. This can be avoided
by following the dietary instructions (e.g. no hard, sticky food). Most times the brackets can generally
be left in place until seen in our office. Loose/ missing brackets will not cause any harm.
Sometimes deep overbite can cause upper teeth to knock the lower brackets off. In such cases,
brackets may not be repaired, until the overbite is improved.

Loose Wire
Don't be alarmed if a wire or band comes loose. This happens occasionally. If a wire protrudes and is irritating,
use a blunt instrument (the eraser end of a pencil) and carefully, gently push the irritating wire under the braces.
Simply get it out of the way. If irritation to the lips or mouth continues, place wax on the wireto relieve the annoyance.

Loosening of Teeth
This is to be expected throughout treatment. This is nothing to worry about, as it is a normal process Teeth must
loosen first so they can be moved. This will occur several times over the course of treatment. Once active movement
has ceased, the teeth will become rigid again in their new, corrected positions.

Lost Retainer
Your retainer holds your teeth in place after the active treatment is finished.
Please contact us immediately to make a new retainer to prevent your teeth from shifting.

After Hours
We are on call 24 hours a day. Should you have an orthodontic emergency after office hours,
please call (201) 572-2100 and leave a message on the emergency line.
